Innovative Teaching in Biology Classes, Large and Small
The Biology Department has tested teaching methods that keep students engaged and accountable, even in its 700-student classes. As a result, more students are passing the courses—with better grades—than in past years.

 
Awards and Honors
Sheman Alexie Alexie Receives PEN/Faulkner Award
Sherman Alexie, senior artist in residence in the Department of American Ethnic Studies, has received the PEN/Faulkner award for his latest book, War Dances. PEN/Faulkner is the largest peer-juried prize for fiction in the United States.
William Johnson

Prestigious Putnam Fellowship for Math Undergrad
William Johnson, majoring in mathematics and computer science, was named a Putnam Fellow—the first for the UW—placing among the top five out of more than 4,000 students who entered the prestigious competition this year.

Jentery Sayers

Sayers Named "Future Leader" for Digital Humanities Work
Jentery Sayers, a doctoral student in English literature and language who incorporates digital technology in his teaching, has received the K. Patricia Cross Future Leaders Award from the Association of American Colleges and Universities.
