UW Faculty, Staff, and Retirees Create
100+ Endowments
On May 1, the College celebrated a very special group of donors: current and retired faculty and staff who have created endowments in Arts and Sciences through the Faculty-Staff-Retiree (FSR) Campaign for Students. The Campaign matches gifts of $5,000 to $10,000 to support students. The result has been more than100 new endowments in the College since 2005.
Most FSR donors to Arts and Sciences are members of the College community, like Professors Richard Johnson and Carol Thomas, whose gifts will support Hellenic Studies and the Department of History. Thomas also arranged and contributed to the Joan P. Chaplan Endowed Fellowship to assist students in the School of Nursing.

Some donors work in other UW schools or programs. Nole Ann Ulery-Horsey, a staff member in the School of Nursing, created two scholarships to honor her family’s connections to the UW: the Horsey Family Endowed Scholarship in Nursing and the David Horsey Endowed Scholarship in Communication.
Many gifts honor colleagues. The Dennis Lang Student Award in Disability Studies, for example, honors a staff member in Rehabilitation Medicine who has been an advocate for improved access and better understanding of people with disabilities.
Students are already benefiting from the endowments. Chris Himes, who just completed his Ph.D. in biology with the help of the Kathryn C. Hahn Endowed Writing Fellowship, spoke at the celebration. Hahn, now retired, was a Department of Biology staff member for many years. Her gift, says Himes, is “one more example for me of how everyone in the department works together—staff, faculty, and students.”
A&S Dean Ana Mari Cauce created an endowed fund in memory of her brother Cesar Cauce. At the celebration, she spoke about how moved she was to receive a thank-you note from the student who benefited from her gift. “It was right around Christmas, and it was the best present I could have received,” she said.
The Faculty-Staff-Retiree Campaign for Students continues through December 31, 2008. For more information, contact Antoinette Wills at awills@u.washington.edu or (206) 616-6553.
