Brooks Erin Miner, a scientist and jazz pianist, has been named the UW President’s Medalist for 2003—an honor awarded to the top senior in the graduating class based on overall academic record.

Miner, a zoology major, plans to pursue a science career but says music will remain a “lifetime pursuit.”

This isn’t the first time Miner has been honored at the highest level. He was the Sophomore Medalist in 2000–2001 and the recipient of a Mary Gates Scholarship that has enabled him to do research, including two field trips to Alaska to study migratory birds.

This summer Miner plans to travel to Greenland—again to study birds—and then head for Cuba as part of a UW Comparative History of Ideas program. After spending the next year doing biological research in Seattle and performing jazz, he plans to pursue graduate study in evolutionary biology.
