	Report from the Front Lines in Haiti's Relief Effort A&S alumna Maura O’Neill had just begun working for USAID when a 7.0 earthquake devastated Haiti in January. "As the agency in charge of international development and disaster relief, we kicked into gear minutes after getting notice," recalls O'Neill, who offers an insider's look at the relief effort.
	Undergrads Design Prosthetic Arms Working closely with a Seattle artist with a prosthetic left arm, undergraduates majoring in industrial design tackled an unusual challenge in class last quarter, developing innovative designs for prosthetics.
	Emeritus and Energized: A&S's Mellon Emeritus Fellows “Yes, there is life after retirement, though sometimes I think it will be the death of me,” jokes Dan Waugh, who continues to travel to far-flung locations for his research. Waugh is one of four emeritus faculty, all from the College of Arts and Sciences, selected as Mellon Emeritus Fellows.

	Cultural History, One Stiletto at a Time Students in the course ”Fashion, Nation, and Culture” may never look at a three-piece suit the same way again. Or stilettos. Or any other article of clothing. The course explores Italian culture from the late medieval period through the present day through the study of clothing.
	UW Center for Human Rights Gears Up The new Center for Human Rights, based in the College of Arts and Sciences with Angelina Godoy as director, hopes to encourage broad collaboration on human rights issues. “It’s gratifying to see how readily colleagues across the campus have embraced the Center’s interdisciplinary vision,” says Godoy.
	Academic Learning Links: Introducing Freshmen to Academia Most undergraduates arrive at the UW with only a vague understanding of various academic disciplines and the distinct perspective that each provides. A&S hopes to increase students' awareness of various disciplines through Academic Learning Links, a pilot project for freshmen.

Research
	Despite China's Modernization, the Inequitable Hukou System Remains When the economy floundered, Chinese migrant workers were among the largest casualties globally, in part because of a Maoist-era institution known as hukou that continues to function in China today, creating two levels of citizenship.
	Black Veterans' Vital Role in the Civil Rights Fight In his new book, Fighting for Democracy: Black Veterans and the Struggle Against White Supremacy in the Postwar South, Political Science Professor Christopher Parker explores how serving in the military led black veterans to be willing to fight for civil rights at home.

Awards and Honors
	Recent Awards for A&S Faculty, Staff, and Students This year's Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior Medalists all have majors in Arts and Sciences. Faculty honors include fellowship in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, an NSF CAREER grant, and a lifetime achievement award from the Middle East Medievalists.
