Endowments

Laura S. Harvey

ART HISTORY AT HOME

Each year, A&S alumna Laura Spencer Harvey ('39) makes gifts to the Burke Museum and the A&S College Fund. But this year she did more. Harvey invited more than a dozen art history students into her home to view her exceptional collection of Hudson River School and other paintings.

Harvey's father spent years collecting the paintings, most of which date back to the 1800s. "My parents practically had to do the whole house over to create enough wall space for the artworks," Harvey recalls. "I grew up with the collection. It's just part of me." | story continues |

At its simplest, an endowment is a permanent fund established for a specific purpose. The principal of an endowed fund is invested to grow over time, while the distributions it produces are used to support the endowment’s purpose. Gifts for endowment are extremely valuable in enhancing the quality of the University of Washington’s teaching, research, facilities and student experience, since endowments provide perpetual funding for their designated purposes.

There are three areas of endowment priorities for the College of Arts and Sciences:

  • Faculty - Endowed chairs and professorships provide significant benefits in recruiting and retaining outstanding faculty. These endowed gifts greatly enrich support for the teaching and research activities of distinguished faculty and bring public recognition of their status.
  • Students - Endowed scholarships and fellowships offer donors the opportunity to make possible a university education for deserving students.
  • Programs - Support for programs is broadly defined and may include faculty, student and curricular support.
