BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Michael I. Posner was born in Ohio in 1936. However, his family later moved to Seattle where he graduated from Garfield High School. He received his BS in Physics, with a minor in Philosophy, from the University of Washington in 1957 followed by an MS in Psychology in 1959. From 1957 to 1959, he worked for Boeing as a Research Engineer and investigated the effects of airplane noise on people. Posner subsequently received the Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1962. Professor Posner spent three years on the faculty at the University of Wisconsin and then joined the University of Oregon faculty in 1965, eventually moving to emeritus status in 2000. From 1998-2002 he served as the founding director of the Sackler Institute, Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He currently resides in Eugene and maintains an active research program at the University of Oregon. It is a source of great pride among UW Psychology faculty that Posner’s very first scientific publication was with one of our own, the late Associate Professor Sidney Culbert.

“For my money, he is the best experimental psychologist in the world.” From UW Professor Emeritus Earl Hunt, former chair of the Department of Psychology and Head of the Cognition and Perception area “To summarize Mike’s scientific accomplishments – he’s done it all, done it first, and done it the best…. At multiple points in his career, Mike established entirely new ways of asking questions about the organization of the mind and brain using behavioral, neuropsychological (patients with focal brain lesions), and brain imaging approaches. He literally ‘wrote the book’ in all of these areas.” From UW Assistant Professor Scott Murray Professor Posner is also arguably the most widely honored and influential psychologist of his generation. He was elected to membership in the National Academy of Science (1981) and its Institute of Medicine (1988), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1985), and the Society of Experimental Psychologists (before 1986), a select group of scientific psychologists. He has received Honorary Degrees from the University of Padova, Italy (1998), the University of Granada, Spain (1999), the University of Nottingham (2002), and the University of Paris (2002). Posner is a recipient of the American Psychological Association’s Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award and his book Images of Mind received the Association’s William James Prize as “best book” in 1995. In addition, Posner has received prizes and awards from AAAS, the Dana Foundation, the Pasarow Foundation, the Grawemeyer Foundation, the Fyssen Foundation, NARSAD, the American Philosophical Society, the Oregon Academy of Sciences, the American Psychological Association, the Vollum Foundation, the Human Factors Society, and the American Institute of Research. Posner entered psychology at a time when the then-dominant view of the mind as consisting of a few general faculties (e.g. learning, memory) was being replaced by the realization that the mind/brain system is better thought of as consisting of a large number of specific information processing functions. Examples are the process of recognizing that two symbols are identical, or recognizing that a particular constellation of visual information, e.g. that the physical collection of lines and arcs CAT represents a sound |KAT|, and that that sound is connected to a meaningful concept, i.e. the idea of a “cat.” Posner developed a large number of experimental procedures for measuring exactly how long each of these steps took. For instance, he showed that it takes about 80 milliseconds to retrieve the meaning of a familiar stimulus. In other research he showed how long it takes to shift attention from one stimulus to another in the visual field. This was the beginning of his long and fruitful studies of how humans control attention. In addition to being important in their own right Posner’s findings and techniques proved invaluable in showing how different processes affected the brain. For instance, researchers at the UW used Posner’s methods to show that different individuals may take from 60 to 120 milliseconds to retrieve meaning, and that this variation in the time needed is related to measures of intelligence. Other research efforts used Posner’s techniques to show that shifts of attention are extremely sensitive to drugs but that measures of the time to retrieve meaning are not. This summary carries Posner’s research up roughly to the early 1980s. What he did next was extremely important to both medical and psychological research. Arguably the development of techniques for imaging the brain is the most important medical advances of our time. Posner joined with a group of biomedical researchers at Washington University of St. Louis to combine imaging techniques with the behavioral techniques that he had developed in order to locate where in the brain elementary processes take place. For instance, the Washington University-Oregon team combined behavioral and neuroimaging techniques to locate separate regions for recognizing familiar visual stimuli (e.g. the CAT example above), retrieving the meaning of these stimuli, and retrieving semantic associates of a recognized stimulus (e.g. retrieving the word DOG when presented with CAT and asked to retrieve its opposite). This research has proven extremely important both in understanding how the brain works in general and for use in clinical diagnoses of brain damage. Posner’s popular book (co-authored with Marcus Raichle, MD, Departments of Radiology and Neurology, Washington University School of Medicine) describing this research, Images of Mind, won the American Psychological Association’s William James award in 1995. Posner was one of the first to recognize that the similar logic and research methodology can be applied to study development in infants and young children. As the brain matures it is possible to match the emergence of elementary cognitive functions to brain systems. Posner’s current research (with Professor Emeritus Mary Rothbart) focuses on genetic and experiential factors in the development of brain networks underlying attention and self regulation. Their new book addresses these issues: Educating the human brain by Michael I. Posner and Mary K. Rothbart, 2006. Furthermore, Posner has turned his own attention toward real-world applications of this research. With colleagues from the University of Oregon and abroad, he is finding significant benefits of attention training in children that are manifested in both task performance and brain EEG/ERP changes. He intends for this work to impact educational theory and practice. Posner is recognized for his ability to balance research, teaching, and service. He won the University of Oregon Ersted Award for distinguished teaching in 1975. Professor Posner was Chair of the Department of Psychology at the University of Oregon from 1995-1998.

Posner has had profound effects on the scientific community and the careers and lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of its members. Dr. Posner's impact on the field is evident not only through his own work but also through the work of the large number of students whom he has mentored and who have gone on themselves to make major contributions to the field of psychology.” Many of our own UW Psychology faculty have benefited in one way or another from Posner’s vision, generosity, and enthusiastic personal support. Of those who have trained directly under Posner, Assistant Professor Scott Murray says that he owes his own career path in cognitive neuroscience and functional brain imaging to Posner’s influence: “It is difficult to write a short accolade for an individual who has revolutionized the field of experimental psychology…. On top of his scientific achievements, Mike is an amazing leader with the ability to inspire those around him to reach their full potential. Mike was my undergraduate Honors Thesis advisor and his capacity to respect, and ability to encourage, the development of my own (nascent) scientific ideas amazed me. In 1998, Professor Posner was the Walker-Ames Visiting Professor. He gave the Walker Ames address and two other formal presentations during his week in residency. In 2004, Professor Posner served the University as a member of the Review Committee for the UW Department of Psychology 10-year review. Professor Posner is currently a member of the Advisory Board for the LIFE Center on the Science of Learning. LIFE is short for Learning in Informal and Formal Environments. This research center, funded by NSF, is housed in the College of Education, and includes the program on Cognitive Studies in Education (Principal Investigator is Professor John Bransford) and the Institutive for Learning and Brain Sciences (Professors Patricia Kuhl and Andrew Meltzoff).
